The word beat can also describe an entire instrumental backing in informal conversation. In timing discussions, use it more precisely. At 120 BPM, a counted beat lasts half a second if the displayed rate refers to that beat unit. A drum event can occur on, between or across those beats while the underlying framework stays stable.
A small experiment
Count four equal beats repeatedly over a kick pattern. Add an offbeat tap between them, keeping your spoken count steady. Hear the difference between the framework and the extra events.
Keep this distinction clear
A beat is not necessarily a kick hit. Music can imply a beat without a kick, and a kick can deliberately occur away from an expected beat.
