What it changes in the music
Harmonic balance contributes to a tone’s character. A richer bass can communicate its phrase through upper components while a simple low tone supplies foundation. Filtering and nonlinear processing can change the balance. Not every component in a complex sound belongs to one harmonic series, especially when noise, multiple notes or inharmonic sources are involved.
A small experiment
Play the same note with a simple tone and a richer oscillator shape. Keep the envelope similar and compare the audible texture above the main pitch.
Keep this distinction clear
A harmonic is not the same as a musical harmony. One describes a component relationship inside a sound; the other concerns relationships among notes in the music.
