What it changes in the music

The time and triggering behavior of portamento vary by instrument. Some patches glide between all notes; others require legato overlap. A short gesture can emphasize an arrival, while long repeated slides can blur the line’s pitch center. Test the destination note as well as the motion. A larger interval can produce a very different impression at the same setting.

A small experiment

Choose one slide into a phrase’s important note. Shorten the glide until the destination has enough stable time to be recognized, then compare with a fully articulated version.

Keep this distinction clear

Portamento is not the same as vibrato. One moves between note targets, while the other typically oscillates around a pitch.
