A compressor can respond to a kick while reducing a pad, making a rhythmic opening. Other sidechain uses involve detector filtering or different control signals. The routing and processor determine the behavior. Decide what relationship needs to change before using an external trigger, and listen to the recovery as carefully as the dip itself.
A small experiment
Use a kick to trigger a modest reduction on a sustained pad in your DAW. Compare the processed version with a simple shorter pad envelope.
Keep this distinction clear
Sidechain does not always mean obvious pumping. It describes a control path, which may produce subtle separation or another detector-dependent response.
