What it changes in the music

Tempo provides a time reference for a sequencer, performance or DJ grid. It does not completely describe activity or perceived energy. A sparse pattern at a higher BPM can feel less busy than a dense pattern at a lower one. Changing tempo also differs from changing a recording’s playback speed when pitch behavior is part of the process.

A small experiment

Keep a simple loop fixed and count its pulse at the displayed BPM. Then follow every second beat without altering the audio. Compare your interpretation with the software’s unchanged tempo.

Keep this distinction clear

Tempo and loudness are separate properties. A faster number does not mean a stronger bass, denser arrangement or more prominent lead.
