What it changes in the music

A transient can establish timing and apparent contact before the sound’s body develops. It may be noisy, pitched or a combination. Processing that changes it can alter the groove even when note positions remain fixed. Listen separately to the onset and the following body so a request for more punch becomes a specific musical question.

A small experiment

Compare a drum hit before and after a small attack-shaping change. Keep levels similar and identify whether the onset, body or both changed.

Keep this distinction clear

A transient is not the entire drum sound. Its tail and pitched body can carry equally important information about weight and space.
