The idea to listen for
Filter key tracking links a parameter to the played note. Depending on the instrument, higher notes can move the cutoff upward so their harmonic structure is not disproportionately muted. This does not mean every patch needs full tracking. A deliberately darker high register can be a compositional choice. Test the actual phrase range instead of adjusting the setting while holding only one convenient note.
Set up a fair comparison
Try the exercise
- With key tracking disabled, play the lowest and highest notes your phrase uses. Compare their articulation and harmonic balance.
- Introduce a modest positive tracking amount. Recheck both ends while keeping the rest of the patch unchanged.
- Play the complete line and reduce tracking if the upper notes become overly pointed or inconsistent with the intended role.
If the result is not working
If tracking seems reversed, inspect the destination and polarity in the modulation routing. If the sound varies mainly in level, velocity mapping or oscillator behavior may be more relevant than the filter.
A closer listening check
Ask whether the phrase sounds like one instrument traveling through its range. Uniform brightness is not mandatory, but abrupt unintended changes can distract from the melody or bass movement.
