Subdivision, syncopation and perceived pulse

A regular beat and a syncopated phrase can coexist. Listen for a stable reference, then notice which sounds reinforce it and which lean away from it. A sixteenth-note grid is a useful sketchpad, but a recording may include timing and articulation that the grid cannot capture. Swing changes a relationship inside the subdivision; it should be tested against the other layers rather than treated as a universal percentage for a style. Compare one altered event with a baseline and describe the result as an audible relationship. This exercise builds an original pattern rather than extracting or identifying the commercial drum sequence.

A useful session with this tool

A groove is a relationship between events and the spaces around them. This sixteen-step grid makes those relationships visible before you reach for a more elaborate drum instrument. Its three rows represent an original synthesized kick, a noise-based snare and a short noise hi-hat. The pattern is one bar of four-four time, with four sixteenth-note steps in each beat. It is a small practice surface for testing a rhythmic idea noticed in the reference. The supplied pattern does not claim to reproduce the commercial drum part.

  1. Start by playing the supplied pattern at a comfortable practice tempo. Each numbered button switches one instrument event on or off; its pressed state is available to keyboard and screen-reader users. Count four steady beats while watching the highlighted steps. Stop after you can describe where the snare sits relative to the kick.
  2. Change one event rather than replacing the whole pattern. Remove a hi-hat immediately before a snare, for example, and ask whether the snare feels more exposed. Restore it before trying a different edit. The purpose is to make the consequence of a single rhythmic decision audible.
  3. Move the swing control in a modest amount. Swing lengthens the first interval of each sixteenth-note pair and shortens the second while preserving the total pair duration. Compare the result at the same practice tempo. A number on the slider is not a universal measurement of feel or an estimate of swing in the reference track.
  4. Write down the step you changed, the direction of the change and the effect you heard. Export the pattern before leaving. For a DJ exercise, listen to a transition and ask whether the combined percussion supplies two competing accents or one understandable pulse. Use the grid to demonstrate your hypothesis in isolation.

A sparse pattern can be easier to understand than a busy one, especially when you are listening through a phone speaker. Notice whether a missing event creates useful anticipation or merely makes the bar difficult to follow. The bar-duration readout is calculated from your chosen tempo. Playback repeats the pattern for at most eight loops so that a comparison has a natural stopping point. You can stop it sooner at any time, and changing timing controls stops playback before the next comparison.

These are simple browser-generated practice drums. The tool does not extract a drum pattern, reproduce a particular producer’s sound, measure human timing or account for every articulation in a recording. Browser audio timing also depends on device performance. Export original practice MIDI to bring four bars of the current grid into your DAW. The file preserves the chosen tempo and swing, using General MIDI drum notes on channel 10; choose a compatible drum instrument after import. It contains your practice pattern, not notes extracted from the reference song.
