What it changes in the music

Automation can move a fader, filter, send or other control across a phrase. A deliberate arc gives repeated material a direction. Constant motion on many parameters may obscure which change matters. Begin with a destination and compare different timings for the same range. The curve on screen is a representation; the audible musical relationship is what needs to work.

A small experiment

Automate one filter or effect send across eight bars. Compare a gradual change with a later faster movement toward the same endpoint while keeping the notes unchanged.

Keep this distinction clear

Automation is not the same as improvement. A moving control needs a musical purpose, and a static setting can be appropriate when the arrangement already provides enough development.
