What it changes in the music

A transition can be gradual, abrupt, subtractive or effect-led. Its success depends on the intended relationship between what leaves and what arrives. Timing, density, harmony and level all contribute. A large effect gesture may decorate the process without solving incompatible material. Establish the plain handover first, then decide whether additional treatment strengthens the story.

A small experiment

Practice a simple change without effects and write what the incoming material should become responsible for. Add one gesture only after that responsibility is clear.

Keep this distinction clear

A transition is not synonymous with a riser or echo. Those are possible tools; the actual change in musical information is the underlying event.
